Test?

“So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them.”

## Hospitality

His intention to go on is peculiar to me, but it reminds me of the two angels that came to Lot at Sodom. Jesus does not impose Himself on their hospitality. Yet, He waited for their insistence as the two angels did for Lot’s. Genesis 19:2-3a “...’My lord’s, please turn aside to your servant’s house and spend the night’... They said, ‘No; we will spend the night in the town square.’ But he pressed them strongly...” Abraham had just bargained a deal with God about saving Sodom if at least ten righteous men were found there. But there were not, so they saved only a few out of it. Lot doesn’t always appear righteous in his decisions, but the New Testament addresses him this way in 2 Peter 2:7 “And if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked…” Why would he be considered this after all he was involved in? Is it possibly because of his actions of hospitality towards strangers?

## Who’s

Was this possibly just a hospitality test?! Lot had most likely been influenced more than he thought by Abraham all his young years. His actions now showed that he had walked with Abraham, the friend of God. Jesus knows these two disciples walking to Emmaus, but He wants to see if they know Him. Will they continue what He began after He’s gone? Will it show that they walked with Jesus? Do they belong to

## Self-Check

We often hear preachers say that offering hospitality to strangers is part of the culture in the Middle East. Well, the Culture of Christ is separate and above all other cultures. It’s what He expects from His Disciples no matter where they live, and it involves hospitality to strangers. For many of us, just looking a stranger in the eye would be a start. Speak to them like they exist. Hold a door. Let someone else go first. We should conduct ourselves at a certain standard as Christians, because the world is watching. But more than the world watching our Christianity; Christ is watching.
