King of the Promise
“But he said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is David's son? For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”’ David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?””

## Son of David
Here Jesus teaches the concept that He is the ancestor and the descendant in the same family line as David. Matthew gives an extra detail: Jesus spurs this conversation questioning the Pharisees in Matthew 22:42 “saying, ‘What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is He?’ They said to Him, ‘The Son of David.’” Salvation comes by the Christ. It also is said to come from the Lord’s right hand (Psalms 98:1; 110:5), so the Christ comes from the Lord’s right hand. Just as Jesus quotes the first line of Psalm 22 from the cross, it references the whole Psalm. Here He quotes Psalm 110’s first line. The author of Hebrews uses Psalm 110 to go on extensively about Jesus being “a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek” having no beginning and no end (Psalms 110:4; Hebrews 7). So Whoever the Christ is when He comes, He existed before He was born. The Christ is the Son of God (Matthew 16:16; 26:62) and became a Son of Man (John 12:34). It was God who established the line of David promising it to never end (2 Kings 2:4). Then God Eternal came in the flesh in the line of David; being Himself the long awaited Messiah, the Son of David. He is therefore the fulfilling of His own promise! After all, doesn’t it make sense to us that the person who makes a promise is the one responsible for keeping it.
## All in All
In loneliness I sometimes wish Jesus would show up and sit down in a body and talk with me. But He has a way of surrounding things and permeating them all at the same time. He is before and after; ever
present. He is within and without; ever through and throughout. We are never alone. While Ephesians 4:10 tells us, “He...ascended far above the heavens, that He might fill all things,” Colossians 3:11 says, “Christ is all, and in all.” He is “the first and the last, the beginning and the end” (Revelation 22:13).
## Self-Check
No situation, no matter how overwhelming, can overtake us when we stand with Him. He was with us before it came and will be with us after it’s done. He was with us throughout the whole ordeal. He surrounds and permeates. He is the Answer to the promises He has made. He is the King of the Promise that was made. He is in all.
