The Cup of Cups
““And likewise [taking] the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.’””
Luke 22:20 →
## The Cup of Redemption
In Jewish Passover traditions, we find 4 cups of red wine being served throughout the Seder. In order, they are the cup of Sanctification, the cup of Plagues, the cup of Redemption, and the cup of Praise. Opinions vary on which cups Jesus drank and at what point in the meal He ceases. So which cup will He not drink of until that
## Day?
One Jewish website 1 remarks that the Seder is begun when the cup of Sanctification is taken by all at the table. This author also points out that the cup taken “after they had eaten” would’ve been the third cup. Matthew (26:29) and Mark (14:25) tell us Jesus says, “I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that Day when I drink it [with you] new in the Kingdom of God [My Father]”. This implies Jesus didn’t drink the third or fourth cups; those of Redemption and Praise. So the cup He raised for the New Covenant in His Blood was the third cup, the cup of Redemption; also referred as the cup of Blessing. A detail to notice is that the last cup He drank would’ve been the cup of Plagues. This represents all the Wrath of God on Egypt during the Exodus. He drank the cup of Plagues from the table to the garden to the cross, but on the third day, He became the cup of Redemption!
## The Cup of Praise
So when will He drink the cup of Praise? Revelation 19:1 “After this [the fall of Babylon] I heard...a...voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out, ‘Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God...’

4 And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshipped God who was seated on the throne, saying, ‘Amen.
## Hallelujah!’
5 And from the throne came a voice saying, ‘Praise our God, all you His servants, you who fear Him, small and great.’ 6 ...the voice of a great multitude...crying out, ‘Hallelujah!... 7 ...the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready;’”
## Self-Check
Making much effort to read many Jewish commentaries about Passover, many rabbis site their traditions, but give no explanation of why they do certain things. They quote which rabbi, from what Mishna, and from about what time period a tradition was started but often leave symbolisms completely unexplained unless you check out the interpretations of Messianic Jewish rabbis who observe Passover. They supply ample explanation of the multiple symbols involved. They point to Messiah! So what? Without Messiah, there is no explanation. Without Messiah, we are stuck in the cup of Plagues. And the only Way to the cup of Praise is through the cup of Redemption, Who is Jesus Christ!
