Jesus is a Good God

And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.

Luke 18:18-19

## Only God Is Good

There it is. That knock at the door. It’s Jehovah’s Witnesses calling again. Many are bugged by them and try to hide in their house. Christians should be most upset by them for the false Christ they preach saying He is just a man. In this section of Scripture we see one of their regular proof text that isolates Jesus from God when you isolate the verse. They make Him less than Protestant doctrine; less than the Council of Nicaea penned in 325 AD. In fact, Constantine’s efforts to “standardize“ the doctrines of Christ was due to false doctrines floating around; not to establish new ones.

## So Jesus Is Good

We believe in One God, the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in One Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God...God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made… -Nicene

## Creed, 1975 Ecumenical version

When He said, “I And the Father are One” (John 10:30), we should realize, just as the Nicene Creed summarizes from Scripture, the Father and the Son are both credited with Creation! God the Father says of the Son, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of Your Hands” (Hebrews 1:10). Jesus says He had glory before the world existed (John 17:5). Matthew (12:8), Mark (2:28), and Luke (6:5) all record Jesus saying He is Lord of the Sabbath. So He is above even a Law of Moses which Moses received from YHWH God. In questioning whether Jesus was the Christ, the Sanhedrin confirmed the Christ the “Son of God” (Matthew 26:63). John 5:18

“This is why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him...He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.” The Father has given the task of judgment to the Son (John 5:22,27). Jesus has the power to forgive sins (Mark 2:10), raise the dead (John 5:25,28), and grant Eternal Life (John 10:27-28).

## Self-Check

So how do we explain Jesus’ comment? Sometimes simply reading written words on the page with the wrong vocal tone imposes our already held beliefs on the text. His Statement could imply, “Only God is good, and I’m not Him.” Or “Only God is good. Are you suggesting...I’m Him?” Don’t build your doctrine over an isolated questionable comment of Scripture. The Bible as a whole agrees… Jesus is the Lamb of God (John 1:29). The Lamb is the Lord of lords and King of kings (Revelation 17:14). This Lord and King is the Word of God (Revelation 19:13, 16). The Word of God is God (John 1:1).
